Ammo Analysis: .223 Match w/ Savage 110 Elite Precision

Hello friends,

Welcome to our first Ammo Analysis! This article is a Patreon exclusive and won't be available anywhere else. If you want to support our work, please consider joining us on CO+ via Patreon.

So... What is an Ammo Analysis? It's where we pick a small group of ammunition, typically from various manufacturers, suited for a specific purpose, and shoot it in a firearm built for the same purpose to see the kind of performance you may expect if you did the same. We'll have photos and groups from our range day testing as well as detailed info for each box of ammo tested bellow.

This time around, we used a Savage 110 Elite Precision in .223 Remington, the review for which is coming soon. And without saying too much - that thing shoots absolute LASER BEAMS. Look forward to that review, it'll be a good one.

Why .223 Remington?

We're starting here because this cartridge has been around FOREVER - and it's so ubiquitous and common with millions of rounds fired every day for various purposes. Our purpose today is precision shooting. You might not think the .223 Rem to be a precision cartridge, and....it's not, not really. Sure, it's fast, and as you'll soon find out - deadly accurate. But, the lighter weight can struggle at extreme distance. Lighter at least compared to something in .308, which we'll also be testing in the next Ammo Analysis (including a round that took us all the way to 1,000 yards!) So why then? Well, the .223 is abundant, affordable, and adaptable - all great things when it comes to training.

Keep in mind, we're shooting for groups, not bullseye. That said. we've picked from a short list of very well known and well loved factory match ammunition, including:

PMC X-TAC Match 77gr OTM ($30 CAD)
Hornady Match 75gr BTHP ($43 CAD)
Federal Gold Medal Sierra Match King 77gr ($40 CAD)
Hornady BLACK 75gr BTHP ($34 CAD)
